The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of two Lords
of Appeal in Ordinary. The Right Honourable Lord Justice Lawrence
Antony Collins in succession to The Right Honourable The Lord Hoffmann
who retires on 20 April 2009; and The Right Honourable Sir Brian Kerr,
Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland in succession to The Right
Honourable The Lord Carswell who retires on 28 June 2009.
Biographical Notes
Lord Justice Lawrence Antony Collins (67) was
admitted as a solicitor in 1968, took Silk in 1997 and was appointed a
Deputy High Court Judge in 1997. He was appointed to the High Court in
2000 and made a Bencher (Inner Temple) in 2001. He was appointed to the
Court of Appeal in 2007. He has been a Fellow of Wolfson College,
Cambridge since 1975 and a Fellow of the British Academy since 1994.
Lord Justice Collins was knighted in 2000.
Sir Brian Kerr (61) was called to the Bar (Northern
Ireland) in 1970, to the Bar of England and Wales in 1974 and took Silk
(Northern Ireland) in 1983. He was made a Bencher (Northern Ireland) in
1990 and an Honorary Bencher (Gray’s Inn) in 1997. He was appointed a
High Court Judge in Northern Ireland in 1993 and in 2004 he was
appointed Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland. Sir Brian Kerr was
knighted in 1993.
