SHARED PARENTAL LEAVE & BARRISTERS – EVERYTHING YOU’VE EVER WANTED TO ASK

Many barrister parents will also share the main responsibility for the care of children with their partner or spouse.  The statutory regime of Shared Parental Leave provides employees with flexibility in how people care for their child in the first year after the child’s birth so as to improve gender equality, support career development and allow both parents to spend time with their children.  The BSB, supported by the Bar Council has adapted this regime for barristers, since their self-employed status excludes them from the statutory scheme. https://www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/media-centre/press-releases-and-news/bsb-proposes-change-to-its-rules-to-require-chambers-to-allow-all-self-employed-barristers-access-to-parental-leave/

Rachel Crasnow QC, who successfully lobbied the BSB to change the rules on parental leave last year, will explain the objectives and mechanisms of the new scheme and discuss how it can work for both individual barristers, and chambers to make it easier for barristers to combine a career and family, whilst ensuring chambers can manage their finances.

This session will discuss the theme of parental leave from all angles and is particularly relevant -not just for parents -but for anyone with a chambers’ leadership, managerial or equalities role, since chambers’ parental leave policies need to be compliant by October 2018.

We’ll be looking at the importance of chambers’ policies on parental leave as well as flexible working, so if you are a chancery barrister with children, this talk is an essential part of your 2018 path to well-being!  Likewise, this talk will be of crucial importance to E & D Officers and Heads of Chambers.
