About Us

The Chancery Bar Association was established in 1935 and is the oldest specialist bar association.

The ChBA has over 1300 members.  Our members are barristers who practise Chancery law.  The Chancery Bar offers great depth of legal expertise across the whole spectrum of finance, business  and property law.  It stands for excellence, knowledge and attention to detail.

Our members provide specialist advice and high quality advocacy in all courts and tribunals in England and Wales and in many courts and tribunals abroad. They regularly appear in the Chancery Division of the High Court, but are equally at home in other divisions of the High Court.  Our members also appear in county courts, specialist tribunals, arbitrations and mediations.  Many of our members act as arbitrators and mediators.

The main functions of the Chancery Bar Association are:

  • Education:  We provide a wide variety of seminars and lectures, together with two Conferences each year and a New Practitioners' Programme.  These events are all accredited for CPD (continuing professional development).
  • Promotion:  We promote the Chancery Bar to clients, and potential clients both domestically and internationally.  We also provide information to students by staging or participating in an Annual Careers Fairs.
  • Representation:  We represent the interests of the Chancery Bar on the Bar Council and the Bar Standards Board.  We also liaise with other professional bodies about the work of the Chancery Bar.
  • Responding to Consultations: We represent the interests of the Chancery Bar in response to consultation papers issued by the Government, the Judiciary, the Law Commission and other organisations.
  • Promoting Equality & Diversity:  We further the policies of the Bar Standards Board, participate in schemes run by the Inns of Court, and have our own initiatives, which include a mentoring scheme.
