Benefits of Joining

The ChBA provides a range of services to its members and aims in a number of ways to promote their interests.  Here is an outline of the benefits of membership.  More details can be found on other pages of this website.

Education

• Each year, in January, the ChBA holds a popular Annual conference, open only to members and earning 9 CPD points.
• There is a Summer Conference in June open only to members and earning 3.5 CPD points.
• Throughout the year, seminars, usually lasting for 1.5 hours and earning 1.5 CPD points, are held in London and other cities.
• An annual lecture is given by a speaker of high distinction, and other occasional lectures are organised, sometimes in conjunction with other bar associations.
• For new practitioners (1-7 years), programmes dedicated to topics of immediate relevance are provided.  Recent subjects have included possession actions, interim applications and bankruptcy petitions.

Information

• The public areas of the website are open to all users.  By joining the ChBA your name will be added to the list of all members accessible by solicitors and others wishing to instruct a barrister.
• Members have access to the Members Section of this website.  In that section there is a full library of seminar notes, texts of talks and lectures and other useful material.
• In term time a newsletter is sent to members by email.  It alerts members to forthcoming events and much more besides.

Career Development

The ChBA holds a variety of events aimed at enabling members to develop themselves and their practices:

• From time to time seminars are held to provide information about applying for judicial or tribunal appointments.
• It may also sometimes be possible for members to be put in touch with other members or ex-members who sit as part-time or full-time judges or tribunal members to enable them to better understand what those positions involve and the recruitment process.
• We have established a mentoring scheme.

Specialist Bar Association

• The ChBA is the oldest specialist bar association.
• It provides responses to proposals and consultations by Government and other bodies affecting law or practice in fields affecting its members.
• The ChBA is represented on a number of court users and similar committees.

The ChBA is run by a committee.  The names of the committee members are listed on the website.  Elections are held annually.  All members are eligible to stand.
