How to Apply for Full Membership

Are you eligible for Membership?

Full membership of the Chancery Bar Association is open to:

  1. Practising barristers in independent practice at the Bar of England and Wales or practising barristers who have been called to the Bar of England and Wales and are now employed in England and Wales whose work consists primarily of Chancery Work.
  2. Practising barristers in independent practice at the Bar of England and Wales who are tenants in Chambers and intend and are likely to develop a practice which consists primarily of Chancery Work.

Chancery Work means:

  • work that is commonly or traditionally undertaken in the Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice and such other contentious and non-contentious work as is, in the opinion of the Committee, of a type commonly or traditionally undertaken by members of the Chancery Bar, whether (in the case of contentious or potentially contentious work) in the Chancery Division or in any other court or tribunal.

How to Apply

  • Please check carefully that you are eligible for membership in accordance with the criteria set out above.  If you have been practice for less than three years, then you will need to give reasons to demonstrate that you intend and are likely to develop a practice which consists primarily of Chancery Work.
  • Follow this link to the on-line application form.  Please also inform our administrator Francesca Compton at admin@chba.org.uk that you have submitted an application (recently we have had a technical hitch and, whilst this is resolved, we wish to ensure your application is not lost in the ether).
  • Fill in the form and press submit.
  • You will then be requested to make the appropriate online payment once your application has been approved by the Committee.
  • If you are not eligible for membership, then any application you submit will be rejected by the Committee.
