Tackling Sexual Harassment

Tackling Sexual Harassment and Inappropriate Behaviour

A seminar on 21 May 2018 at Wilberforce Chambers, 8 New Square, Lincoln’s Inn at 6pm (registration from 5.30pm) followed by a reception.

This training session is hosted by the Association’s E & D Committee and has been developed and will be presented by members of the Bar Council’s Equality & Diversity Committee and Retention Panel. It includes a summary of legal and regulatory duties relating to Sexual Harassment, but is primarily designed to raise awareness and confidence in raising and handling issues relating to Sexual Harassment and inappropriate behaviour through a series of practical case studies drawn from the experience across the Profession.

Who should attend:

Barristers, chambers’ Equality and Diversity Officers, practice managers, clerks and other staff, anyone responsible for managing complaints about harassment

This training is based on discussions with individuals who have been harassed, a range of individuals both in and outside the profession who have experience in dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace, existing Bar Council and Bar Standards Board guidance, as well as extensive research into problems and solutions in other professions.

Opening up the conversation about these issues has generally met an overwhelmingly positive response, and a universally positive response at the junior end. An important part of the solution to this issue is sending out the message that Chambers is taking this issue seriously, and commissioning this training and/or developing and communicating a well-considered policy sends out that message loud and clear.

It can also lead to individuals coming forwards with concerns, which enables any chambers to provide support needed and to address behaviours. Where appropriate, support can also be provided to perpetrators, benefiting them too.
